  • Countdown to Download 2010 – Which rock/metal acts from the lineup will I pick tonight?

Posted on June 6th, 2010 GuitarSavvy No comments

OK – so tonight I think we should have a little bit of… Saxon, Stone Temple Pilots and one of the loudest, most eardrum crunching acts on the entire blue planet motörhead!

So Saxon opened for motörhead at the Glasgow gig I saw them at a couple of years ago at the Carling Academy (now the O2 Academy) in Glasgow. I had never really been into Saxon all that much, I mean I had >British Steel and a few other random bits and pieces from the Saxon back catalogue but I was never what you would call a die-hard Saxon fan. So I was really surprised when they took to the stage. they were loud, funny and managed to crank up the crowd to more than respectable levels (not an easy job in Glasgow). I have to say I thought they were pretty damned good. At Donington Park next week they’re on the Maurice Jones (main) stage on Sunday at 12:35pm. So here is shameless Youtube vid number 1 – Saxon playing Wheels of Steel live:

    Next up…

Stone Temple Pilots… not to be overshadowed by the messy D.I.V.O.R.C.E. from Velvet Revolver, Scott Weiland’s once former and now current band are making a huge push for supergroup status. Relatively unknown in the UK (not completely unknown – STP fans, please don’t get too annoyed – I’ve been a fan since hearing their track on the soundtrack album to the movie The Crow- entitled Big Empty – The Crow is one of my favourite soundtrack albums of all time), Stone Temple Pilots with Weiland back at the helm are sure to be one of the highlights of Download 2010. So here’s the Youtube vid of a live performance of Big Empty:

Finally, motörhead. Now to anyone reading this who hasn’t heard of motörhead… I have one question… are you not from the around these parts? (meaning the civilised and uncivilised world). One of the downright dirtiest hard rocking, JD drinking bands out there, motörhead and particularly frontman Lemmy Kilmister are the very definition of the word “rockers”. As well as the customary motörhead live vid I’ll put in the trailer for the possibly forthcoming (or possibly not, who knows) Lemmy movie – see what Lemmy’s peers have to say about the great man. This is the same Lemmy who, after blowing away the O2 Academy in Glasgow was found asleep on a park bench in the wee-small hours of a cold November morning on the Clyde-side, having failed to make it back to his hotel, with just a bottle of JD for company. Found by a Rock Radio listener, Lemmy was gently awoken and after thanking the fan, made his way back to his hotel as though this sort of thing happened every day. Come to think about it, it probably does.

motörhead are also playing the Maurice Jones Stage on Sunday 13 June at 5:25pm.

    So the vids:

If this doesn’t get you fired up for the Download Festival 2010, check your pulse.

    Who should we have next?

  • Countdown to Download 2010 – Deftones play Donington

Posted on June 5th, 2010 GuitarSavvy No comments

So in case you haven’t heard the news, the Download Festival 2010 is within range of a piss-filled beer glass (plastic, of course). And to celebrate we’re nabbing a few Youtube videos (of some of the rockingest acts who will be there) from the interweb and passing them off as our own. This vid features Californian band known as Deftones. These guys have been around since 1988 and have 6 studio albums out there with the latest, Diamond Eyes being released in May 2010. The band are touring USA this Autumn but before they do, they’re hitting Donington Park and the Download 2010 Festival with everything they have. Which is a lot. They’ll be on the Maurice Jones Stage on Saturday at 7pm, immediately before Download Saturday headliners Rage Against the Machine. Check out the video for the first single from Diamond Eyes – Rocket Skates:

The Download Festival 2010 is just around the corner and it’s going to be a belter.

So without further ado, here’s Them Crooked Vultures:

  • Slash in talks to play Download 2010 and other festivals/venues

Saul Hudson AKA Slash, Velvet Revolver concert...

Slash is expected to hit the road this summer (for the Northern Hemispherers) after his new “solo” project hits the shelves in May. The Les Paul-totin’, tophat-sportin’ rocker, whose solo project includes collaborations with other rock royalty including Ozzy, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop and, er, Fergie Pea (apparently she can rock with the best of them, and she’s hot as well so no judegement from me) is in talks with the Download management to secure a slot at the Donington Park festival. Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge vocalist and guitarist) is the likely choice for frontman on the Slash tour. Talking to Radio 1 Newsbeat Slash said:
“I know we were talking about doing Download and there’s a couple of other ones. We’ll do some around Germany as well.”

Check out this unashamed, randomly placed YouTube vid of Myles Kennedy talking about his guitar rig. Only for those of us who get turned on by guitars, amp stacks and effects pedals.

Alice in Chains at Download Festival 2006

Seems like just yesterday I was enviously reporting on the events of Download 2009 (from my pokey wee office in Glasgow). And it seems that the same will happen again this year. This is made worse with the news that AC/DC will headline Download 2010 (the 30th anniversary of Monsters of Rock festival), which takes place at Donington Park June 11-13 2010. Tickets will sell out fast because Angus and Malcolm Young, Brian Johnson, Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd (collectively known as AC/DC) will be joined by the likes of Them Crooked Vultures, Deftones, Megadeth, Motorhead, Stone Temple Pilots, Bullet For My Valentine and Wolfmother (many more bands to be confirmed).

Tickets go on sale this Friday(January 29th) from the Download Festival website and ticket sellers including TicketMaster.
