  • Google Interactive Logo Celebrates Les Paul’s 96th Birthday in Style

Posted on June 9th, 2011 GuitarSavvy No comments

Happy birthday Les Paul – so say all of us – and Google, it seems.Les Paul GoogleCheck out today’s cool interactive Google logo in honour of the late, great man himself. Have a strum using your mouse, or click the keyboard icon and use QWERTY… etc. Could do with a few pedals to mix things up though, right?

Les Paul, who died in 2009, would have been 96 today! Check him out back in 1999 in New York:

  • Gary Moore Dead at 58

Posted on February 6th, 2011 GuitarSavvy 1 comment

Just heard of the death of Gary Moore… sad news indeed. No news yet on cause of death but if you’re interested, keep checking news sites for updates.

The former Thin Lizzy guitar player was and will continue to be a major influence in the lives and playing of countless guitar players. :(

Thanks to Tom Russell of Rock Radio for the news. Read more about the death of Gary Moore on the BBC news pages.

  • Gibson Firebird X Launches in New York

Posted on November 3rd, 2010 GuitarSavvy No comments

So the Gibson Firebird X launch took place in New York City a few short days ago – here’s a vid of the guitar in action. Almost universally scathing comments from viewers, at least on the first couple of pages. I have to say, I wasn’t that impressed but I didn’t think it was that bad.

The guitar features an ash body, maple neck, three magnetic humbuckers with a piezo pickup at the bridge. The Firebird X has built in guitar effects processing and the Gibson Robot automatic tuning system.

It’s due for release on 11 December 2010 and, in the US at least, the suggested price tag is $5570. Ouch. Only 1800 units will be made – in the first run at least.

I think I’ll save my pennies for a Gibson Les Paul Standard or similar thanks all the same.

Read Music Radar’s story on the Gibson Firebird X here.

  • Weekly Roundup – As I see it.

Posted on August 22nd, 2010 GuitarSavvy No comments

The Guitar Hero: On Tour grip with pick stylus.

    Image via Wikipedia

So – weekly roundup. It’s nearly 2:30am, and I’m not feeling too compus. Is this really the best time to write this stuff? Here goes, anyway…

    Guitar Hero

    So Guitar Hero… the game…
The full track list of the latest incarnation of the divisive guitar game is kicking around. “Just cos you’re good at GH, doesn’t make you a guitar player,” some say… others say “GH introduces rock, hard rock and metal music to a bunch of kids who may have never experienced it before.” Anyhoo – I reckon I’m qualified enough to say GH has it’s place in the universe.
Guitar Hero track list is here.

On the plus side, I heard that Soundgarden, newly reunited, will release a new album to some players via the game so wahaay! I consider myself a Soungarden fan but not really a GH fan. I’ll maybe wait for the general release.

    Tony Iommi’s Gibson SG

OK – more last week’s news but Some scumbag nicked Tony Iommi’s Gibson SG at a concert by the surviving members of Heaven and Hell played in memory of Ronnie James Dio who died recently after a battle with cancer. Hope someone, somewhere will out the thieving detritus.

Joe Satriani – New Album Imminent

Joe “Satch” Satriani has a new album due out soon. Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards (!) – having some trouble unravelling that particular title choice. Maybe when I hear the songs… or maybe not.

    Rock Birthdays

This week saw birthdays for Robert Plant (62) and the late Dimebag Darrell Abbot (44) – any others I missed with my radical apathy (cheers to old mate Pete Bates for that tagline) – sorry – please feel free to update in comments.

Steve Tyler is American Idol judge

Spare me. Nothing much to add. Joe Perry summed up my feelings on this when he helped Steve Tyler take a stage dive earlier this week. As much as I love Tyler, I’d have done the same. As long as he wasn’t hurt this time. I’d hate for Liv and me to fall out :)

Right I’m declining fast so best get back to this in the cold light of day. This was if I say so myself, one of the slackest, laziest blog posts, I’ve ever written – I fell asleep no less than 4 times during the writing of it. Feel free to abuse in comments. Peace out.

  • Gibson releases feature-packed Guitar App for iPhone and iPod Touch

Posted on March 3rd, 2010 GuitarSavvy No comments

Gibson App for the iPhone and iPod TouchGibson have just announced the release of a new guitar app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The Gibson App is packed with great tools for guitarists including:

    • a metronome (allows tempo setting by choosing a specific beat per minute or even by simply tapping the screen three times at the desired tempo)
    • a chromatic tuner (the iPhone version of the tuner can detect the notes played on your guitar whereas the iPod Touch simple guitar tuner version plays the notes specified allowing you to tune to match (because the iPod Touch lacks a mic)
    • Guitar chord charts (over 30 chord charts with marked finger positions) for reference
    • Video content with lessons – to teach new guitar riffs, guitar licks and chord arrangements (to be updated regularly)
    • Headlines from Gibson.com about artists, new products, contests & special events, articles, news stories and factual information
