News just in, Glasto-ites: Gorillaz to replace U2

Following on from the news that U2 have pulled out of Glasto, (not to mention a significant chunk of their US dates on their 360^o tour)… they will be replaced by virtual band the Gorillaz featuring Blur frontman Damon Albarn.

The Gorillaz released their latest album (Plastic Peach) in March and it features guest performances by the likes of Lou Reed, Bobby Womack and Snoop Dogg although no word yet if the Gorillaz will be “joined” on stage by any guests.

Roundup – U2 pull out of Glasto, Led Zepelin may step in! Slipknot bass player found dead, Stones Number 1 again

A huge blow to the Glastonbury festival organisers and fans when it became clear Bono (who underwent emergency surgery on his back after after injuring himself and experiencing partial paralysis in his legs during rehearsals for the band’s current tour) wouldn’t be fit in time for the festival and that U2 would have to pull out of Glasto.  Then Jimmy Page went on record (well, in the Sun newspaper) stating he wouldn’t rule out a Led Zep reunion to fill in for U2. A real case of Oh NNNnnnn… YEEESS if it comes to pass!  Having said that, Coldplay are also rumoured to be interested in stepping in. Not so good.

The death of Slipknot bass player Paul Gray is still not explained as police await the results of a toxicology screen as part of an autopsy on Paul’s body. “Maggots” (Slipknot fans) around the world are still in shock at Paul’s death. Watch this space for more news.

The Rolling Stones remastered album, Exile on Main Street hits the album chart top spot – the Stones’ first number one for more than 16 years!

Any other news… hmmm… Yes – I’m just back from Paris, France.  Had a great time ta very much. Was entertained by a George Bush-hating guitarist on the steps of the Sacre Coeur.  I didn’t have the heart to tell him Obama got in. Took some poor quality video which I may fire up here.  Or not.

Limited edition Hotrod Inspired Dean guitars and the Dime Crest Hotrod at NASCAR

So these gorgeous looking guitars with go faster stripes are from Dean Guitars. The chances are, by the time you read this, you won’t be able to lay your hands on one of these for love nor money – they were produced by the Dean Guitars Woodshop to celebrate a new partnership between Dean and Stratus Racing Group and in support of RideforDime.org (remembering Dimebag Darrell, Pantera and Damage Plan guitarist). It was anticipated that the guitars would sell out at a NASCAR event where the #73 car, driven by Derrike Cope, features the full “Dime Crest”. The bonnet (hood) of the car will be auctioned off at the Ride for Dime Concert and Motorcycle Rally later in the year.

Glasto lineup revealed earlier – Slash the Ubiquitous is on there

The Glastonbury Festival 2010 Lineup was announced earlier today – Slash and his band seem to be hitting several festivals this summer – joining them at Glasto are a couple of smaller acts called U2 (I’d never heard of them either… not bad apparently) and Muse. Further acts confirmed for Download 2010 including Slash and Cancer Bats

Several more acts have been announced for the Download 2010 Festival. The full list of additional acts is below and they join the likes of AC/DC, Deftones, Rage Against the Machine, Aerosmith, Megadeth and the Stone Temple Pilots. Additional acts include Slash, Cancer Bats, The Damned Things, Porcupine Tree, White Wizzard, The Used and many more. Interesting that Slash and the Stone Temple Pilots are both set to play the Sunday evening. Former Velvet Revolver vocalist Scott Weiland left VR to rejoin STP in less than amicable circumstances (allegedly) – in one of the Classic Rock Slash Pack interviews with Slash, he mentions that although things were tough when both he and Weiland were in Velvet Revolver together, everything is cooler between them now that they’re apart. Scott blames the WAGS. Velvet Revolver have yet to find a replacement for Weiland and Slash is in no hurry since rushing to put VR together is why they took Weiland on in the first place. Speculation over the choice of replacement vocalist is rife (names banded about include Myles Kennedy (currently touring with Slash’s band and Engelbert Humperdinck).

Slash in talks to play Download 2010 and other festivals/venues

Slash is expected to hit the road this summer (for the Northern Hemispherers) after his new “solo” project hits the shelves in May. The Les Paul-totin’, tophat-sportin’ rocker, whose solo project includes collaborations with other rock royalty including Ozzy, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop and, er, Fergie Pea (apparently she can rock with the best of them, and she’s hot as well so no judegement from me) is in talks with the Download management to secure a slot at the Donington Park festival. Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge vocalist and guitarist) is the likely choice for frontman on the Slash tour. Talking to Radio 1 Newsbeat Slash said:
“I know we were talking about doing Download and there’s a couple of other ones. We’ll do some around Germany as well.”

Aerosmith are the latest addition to Download 2010 Lineup – with Steve Tyler resuming post as frontman

Latest news from Download is that Aerosmith will be appearing at Download Festival 2010 and, get this… Steve Tyler will be frontman once more. The troubled vocalist seems to be on the mend and hopefully the band can put their recent troubles behind them. The public spat between Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry led to massive speculation amongst the media and the blogosphere about who would replace Tyler (Chris Cornell, Billy Idol, Sammy Hagar, Paul Rodgers) and whether or not Aerosmith without Tyler would actually even BE Aerosmith (it wouldn’t – much as I rate the rest of the band). According to this Classic Rock Magazine story, Download organisers have booked Aerosmith with the condition that Tyler is frontman once more. Hurrah for Download again!

In other news, Rage Against the Machine will also join the lineup, which includes headliners AC/DC returning for the 30th Anniversary of their Monsters of Rock appearance. AC/DC have apparently announced that they will appear on the Friday evening and so RATM will probably appear on Saturday with Aerosmith closing the festival on the Sunday evening (Download 2010 runs from 11-13 June 2010).

So Rammstein have just finished the UK leg of their current European tour in support of their new and, might I say particularly awesome album Liebe Ist Für Alle Da (see Amazon player to sample the tracks(below)). The reviews for the show were incredible (see the Times Online review here) as I’m sure I said before, if you’ve never seen a Rammstein gig, make sure you add them to your list of bands to see before you die. Unfortunately all dates were in England-shire so I didn’t get to see them this time but if you were also unlucky enough not to have seen them, you get another chance at this year’s UK Sonisphere Festival at Knebworth Park (30 July to 1 August 2010) – Sonisphere tickets are on sale now. For anyone who is yet to experience Rammstein, check out the video for the latest single Ich Tu Dir Weh (released on 15 February 2010) on Sonisphere TV below – the video is basically a WYSIWYG for their live show. Brilliant!

We’re really spoiled for choice again this year with Iron Maiden playing their only UK 2010 date at Sonisphere, along with the likes of Motley Crue, Slayer, Placebo, the Cult, Anthrax and the critically acclaimed Rollins Spoken Word (you’ve got to see this guy! – Henry Rollins YouTube video here.). He played the O2 Academy in Glasgow recently to some excellent reviews in the press. Anyway, I’m working on a festivals section for Guitar Savvy and will hopefully post some articles and news about the forthcoming crop of summer festivals, beginning with Download (Donington) 2010 and Sonisphere (Knebworth) and the acts still to be confirmed.

AC/DC will headline 30th anniversary Download 2010, along with Them Crooked Vultures, Deftones and more

Seems like just yesterday I was enviously reporting on the events of Download 2009 (from my pokey wee office in Glasgow). And it seems that the same will happen again this year. This is made worse with the news that AC/DC will headline Download 2010 (the 30th anniversary of Monsters of Rock festival), which takes place at Donington Park June 11-13 2010. Tickets will sell out fast because Angus and Malcolm Young, Brian Johnson, Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd (collectively known as AC/DC) will be joined by the likes of Them Crooked Vultures, Deftones, Megadeth, Motorhead, Stone Temple Pilots, Bullet For My Valentine and Wolfmother (many more bands to be confirmed).

Tickets go on sale this Friday(January 29th) from the Download Festival website and ticket sellers including TicketMaster.
