Laney GH50L Review
Posted on May 2nd, 2011 1 commentThe Laney GHH50L guitar amp head is a very versatile bit of gear and with users like Kiko Loureiro (Angra), Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), Mattias Eklundh (Freak Kitchen) and Paul Gilbert you can see that it offers hugely talented people the tone and drive that they require from an amp.

The bit that surprises me about the GH50, is it’s price. As I type It’s going for £491 on the guitarguitar web site, that’s a great price for a great sounding valve amp.Now on to how it actually sounds. The tone from the amp is very bright, I got a big surprise when I plugged in my Ibaenz PGM which has a bright sounding basswood body and could not believe the treble that was coming out of this thing and quickly reached for the treble and bass knobs and rearranged them accordingly. After sitting with it for a while I managed to get a tone I liked, though I was now limited to any further tweaking… enter my friend who has a Les Paul with it’s mahogany body (strong mids, good bass) and WHOA, what a sound! it really chewed up those highs and spewed out monstrous bass providing hours of happy chugging..er, you know
So this was all great but something was missing, I missed the highs and mids, there must be some middle ground, enter, the alder bodied Yamaha Pacifica 821 that I’ve had since early 1990’s. This was the middle ground that I was looking for, simply a great all-rounder, I can see why all those Fender strats over the years have been made out of it and must be one of the most popular woods today, it just gave the amp the scope to provide you with so many tones out of the one setting, SORTED!
This Amp also cleans up very well when you roll the volume knob back, it gives a really good SPANK to your sound and gives a more bluesy tone when your rolling off the full on drive the amp can give you.
So if you’re looking for an amp that’s got a lot to give and won’t have you re-mortgaging then give the Laney GH50L a try.

Charvel San Dimas
Posted on May 2nd, 2011 No commentsCharvel Pro Mod
So the USA models of the San Dimas, So Cal and the limited wild card models have been replaced by Japanese made models (PRO MOD). The question is, are they any good and how do they compare to the USA models?

I’ve played both and I can firmly say that it’s almost the same guitar. The Japanese are now highly respected guitar builders with incredible attention to detail and let me tell you, this is evident in these Charvels.
First off, the neck; the USA made guitars had a custom shop feel from the neck where this is not evident in the Jap model but don’t get me wrong, they have a great feel about them. The finish on the fret edges are like liquid, no intrusion to your playing at all and at certain angles it looks like the wood is scalped. The radius on the neck is 10/16, very cool for your chords low down and flat and fast for your licks up top.

Body wise it’s standard strat shape made from alder, the difference lies with the classic Floyd Rose tremolo and two Seymour Duncan pickups , a 59 and a JB. 1 knob for volume and the good old 3 way selector switch.I personally would have like to have seen the inclusion of an all access heel, a modern touch to the hot rod strat but it’s not a big deal as I do appreciate the classic look and feel of those 80′s guitars. I’m not even bothered by 22 frets instead of 24!
So what do you get? Well, the Jap model comes with a hard-shell case instead of the gig bag the USA model came with, it has the same body, superb pickups, outstanding build quality and not forgetting the attention to detail on those frets goes along way to seeing that this could be the best £629 you’ll ever spend.

Slow down complicated guitar licks without affecting pitch – nail those fast licks in your favourite songs
Posted on March 16th, 2010 No comments
Have you ever wanted to learn to play one of your favourite songs on guitar (or bass or drums or keyboard) but can’t break down the notes/beats in a particularly complicated guitar solo? This software allows you to take an MP3 file (and other formats) for the song you want to learn, select and loop a section of this song and play it back at whatever speed you like without changing the pitch of the song! There’s even a graphic equalizer to let you reduce the impact of the other instruments or the vocals of the song so you can hear the part you want to master. The software is called RiffMaster Pro 3 and is available to buy online. You can even try out RiffMaster Pro 3 for 10 days free of charge. Then, if you think it will be useful to you, you can buy a full license. Check out the demo video below or see more demo videos of the software in action. If you’ve got this software, we’d be grateful if you’d let us know your thoughts about it. Yet more Slash news: first track off new album, By the Sword – listen on Spinner – link here
Posted on February 27th, 2010 No commentsBy the Sword is the first song to be released as a single from the highly anticipated solo album. This track features Andre Stockdale on vocals and is in humble opinion a very strong track. Slash’s playing is as tight as it can be and he makes great use of his Wah pedal on the solos. Andrew Stockdale’s voice is tremendous. Remember, you can get your copy of Slash’s album amonth earlier than everyone else (although copies are limited) with the Classic Rock Magazine Slash Special coming out in April.
It’d be great to hear what you think – listen to By the Sword now on Spinner. Please leave a comment if you have an opinion.

Zakk Wylde wants to interview the Queen – Classic Rock Magazine News
Posted on February 27th, 2010 No comments- Image via Wikipedia
Zakk Wylde, the scarey murrafurra guitarist from Black Label Society (and former long-term guitarist with Ozzy Osbourne) has confessed in an interview with Classic Rock Magazine’s Malcolm Dome that he would like to blag his way into an interview with the Queen, Borat- or Bruno-style where his first question would be rather personal… (see the Classic Rock Story here to find out). I wonder what the answer would be.
