Jimmy Page #2 in Madison Square Garden with Le...

A huge blow to the Glastonbury festival organisers and fans when it became clear Bono (who underwent emergency surgery on his back after after injuring himself and experiencing partial paralysis in his legs during rehearsals for the band’s current tour) wouldn’t be fit in time for the festival and that U2 would have to pull out of Glasto.  Then Jimmy Page went on record (well, in the Sun newspaper) stating he wouldn’t rule out a Led Zep reunion to fill in for U2. A real case of Oh NNNnnnn… YEEESS if it comes to pass!  Having said that, Coldplay are also rumoured to be interested in stepping in. Not so good.

The death of Slipknot bass player Paul Gray is still not explained as police await the results of a toxicology screen as part of an autopsy on Paul’s body. “Maggots” (Slipknot fans) around the world are still in shock at Paul’s death. Watch this space for more news.

The Rolling Stones remastered album, Exile on Main Street hits the album chart top spot – the Stones’ first number one for more than 16 years!

Any other news… hmmm… Yes – I’m just back from Paris, France.  Had a great time ta very much. Was entertained by a George Bush-hating guitarist on the steps of the Sacre Coeur.  I didn’t have the heart to tell him Obama got in. Took some poor quality video which I may fire up here.  Or not.

    Peace

  • Rolling Stones – bookmakers favourite to headline Glastonbury 2010. David Bowie also gets a nod…

Posted on October 7th, 2009 GuitarSavvy 2 comments

Following the news that Glastonbury 2010 tickets sold out within hours of going on sale (how many to genuine music fans, I wonder?), NME reports that the Rolling Stones are 4/1 bookmakers’ favourites to be next years Glastonbury headline act. So if you did jump the gun a bit and managed to land a few tickets, good on you! You could be in for a real treat (the full bookmakers list is at the bottom of this post – again thanks to NME for this info:  I notice that David Bowie is on there - I hope that this just goes to show that it takes more than a low-flying lollipop to keep the great man down – last saw him as cameo with Ricky Gervais in Extras – also below. Hilarious.)

This gives me an excuse (as if I need one) to talk about the opening guitar riff from Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones (see below) – this riff qualifies as one of the finest opening riffs of all time for me.  It’s right up there with AC/DC’s (who will play the Download 2010 Festival – 30th Anniversary of Monsters of Rock and AC/DC’s Back in Black album – there’s a petition underway to get Angus and the boys to play the entire Back in Black album for their set) For Those About to Rock.  Check it out.

The odds Bookies are giving for Glasto acts:

    Rolling Stones 4/1
    Coldplay 8/1
    David Bowie 8/1
    Muse 10/1
    U2 12/1
    Arctic Monkeys 12/1
    Radiohead 14/1
    Prince 16/1
    Elton John 16/1
    Red Hot Chili Peppers 16/1
    Kings Of Leon 16/1
    Green Day 20/1
    Robbie Williams 20/1
    Stone Roses 20/1
    Madness 25/1
    Spandau Ballet 25/1
    Manic Street Preachers 25/1
    Take That 33/1
    Oasis 33/1

  • Death of Rolling Stones founding member Brian Jones: evidence to be re-examined…

Posted on August 31st, 2009 GuitarSavvy No comments

Brian Jones is a founder member and guitarist of the Rolling Stones who was found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool in East-Sussex back in the summer of 1969. The BBC reports that the original inquest returned a verdict of “death by misadventure” but new evidence relating to the stars death is now in the hands of Sussex Police.  There has been much controversy surrounding the death of Jones, who was 27 with many claims that the guitarist was in fact murdered although some reports state that the Rolling Stones guitarist was heavily dependent on drugs and alcohol, backed up by post-mortem reports that allegedly state that Jones’ heart and liver were enlarged, consistent with drugs and alcohol abuse.

I’ll update this story as more information is released so watch this space.
