Further acts confirmed for Download 2010 including Slash and Cancer Bats

Several more acts have been announced for the Download 2010 Festival. The full list of additional acts is below and they join the likes of AC/DC, Deftones, Rage Against the Machine, Aerosmith, Megadeth and the Stone Temple Pilots. Additional acts include Slash, Cancer Bats, The Damned Things, Porcupine Tree, White Wizzard, The Used and many more. Interesting that Slash and the Stone Temple Pilots are both set to play the Sunday evening. Former Velvet Revolver vocalist Scott Weiland left VR to rejoin STP in less than amicable circumstances (allegedly) – in one of the Classic Rock Slash Pack interviews with Slash, he mentions that although things were tough when both he and Weiland were in Velvet Revolver together, everything is cooler between them now that they’re apart. Scott blames the WAGS. Velvet Revolver have yet to find a replacement for Weiland and Slash is in no hurry since rushing to put VR together is why they took Weiland on in the first place. Speculation over the choice of replacement vocalist is rife (names banded about include Myles Kennedy (currently touring with Slash’s band and Engelbert Humperdinck).
Anyway… back to the original thread – went off on a tangent… sorry. The additional announced Download 2010 acts are:
Slash
Porcupine Tree
Michael Monroe
The Used
The Damned Things
Atreyu
Cancer Bats
Senser
Sweethead
Breed 77
Nonpoint
No Americana

Revoker
Young Guns
Tyketto
Year Long Disaster
Enuff Z’Nuff
Panic Cell
Glamour Of The Kill

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter

Alter Bridge tour and new album on the way woohoo
Posted on April 13th, 2010 No comments

Fresh from Myles Kennedy’s tour of duty with Slash’s touring band and Mark Tremonti’s sabbatical catching up with his old mates and touring and making some money and stuff (Creed), Alter Bridge are set to return to the studio to create a much anticipated third album and take things back on the road. The band have announced several UK dates for October already. I’ve seen them twice at the O2 Academy (formerly the Carling Academy) in Glasgow (see my amateurish vid below) and rate them as one of my favourite live acts. Myles has an amazing rock voice (not to mention being pretty damned handy around a fretboard) and Mark’s lead guitar playing is as tight as you’ll ever hear. Drummer Scott Phillips and bassist Brian Marshall manage to hold their own too. You can check out the MP3 samples of the amazing Alter Bridge album “Blackbird” below, if you’re not familiar with the band.
The announced Alter Bridge tour dates (UK) are as follows:
Saturday October 16 – Glasgow Academy
Sunday October 17 – Newcastle 02 Academy
Tuesday October 19 – Manchester Academy
Wednesday October 20 – Nottingham Rock City
Friday October 22 – Hammersmith HMV Apollo
Saturday October 23 – Southampton Guildhall
Monday October 25 – Birmingham 02 Academy
Tuesday October 26 – Bristol Colston HallThanks to Metal Hammer for this news.

Blur back in the studio – new tracks for Record Store Day 17 April 2010
Posted on April 9th, 2010 No comments
Image via Wikipedia
Blur have again reunited, this time in the studio, to record their first new material in a loooong time (8 years or so). The band are putting together two tracks for Record Store Day (17 April 2010), which will be released on 7-inch vinyl – limited to 1000 copies at participating stores.
Damon Albarn:
“We want independent record stores to continue – they’re an important part of our musical culture.
“Music is a simple way for Blur to show our support and I hope people like it.”
This follows on from last summer’s successful Blur reunion where the boys (Damon Albarn (vocals), Graham Coxon (guitar), Alex James (bass) and Dave Rowntree (drums)) performed at several major events: at the Glastonbury and T in the Park festivals as well as an event at London’s Hyde Park (chronicled on the DVD: Blur – No Distance Left To Run
).
So, of course, speculation is rife about how permanent this reunion is and if the current tracks will pave the way for more new Blur material – perhaps even a new Blur album? The band’s label EMI has promised more news on the tracks in the next week or so – but there are apparently no plans to release the tracks on any other format at the moment. We predict that this isn’t the end of the story though

Happy birthday to Angus Young from Cranhill Glasgow and AC/DC of course
Posted on March 31st, 2010 No commentsImage via Wikipedia
Scots-born Angus Young is celebrating his birthday today (31 March 2010). The school uniform wearin’, SG-rockin’, stage-thrashin’ AC/DC guitar player is 55 today. Angus was born on this day 31 March 1955 in Glasgow and was raised in the tough Cranhill area of the city before moving to Australia with his older brother Malcolm and the family in 1963. Angus and Malcolm established AC/DC in 1973.
He might have lost his Weegie accent since then.
Yup… thought so. AC/DC rock!

Bonus material will be included on the Let There Be Rock DVD although details of this haven’t been announced yet.

NME Awards: Pogues Shane McGowan Puts a Spell on You with alternative Haiti single – Johnny Depp playing guitar
Posted on February 25th, 2010 No commentsShane McGowan made an appearance at last night’s NME Music awards to raise more, much needed money for Haiti. The Pogues vocalist introduced the video for an alternative Haiti single to the Simon Cowell produced cover of Everybody Hurts (Haiti Charity Single)
(the REM track from their classic album Automatic for the People
). The alternative Haiti single is a cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell On You” and features Johnny Depp playing guitar (he’s pretty handy around the frets, you know). The track also features the vocal talents of Chrissie Hynde, Nick Cave, Paloma Faith and Shane McGowan himself. The alternative Haiti song will be released online from the usual places on 8 March 2010.
The project collaborators are:
Vocals: Shane MacGowan, Nick Cave, Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie, The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde, Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), Paloma Faith and Eliza Doolittle.
Guitars: James Walbourne, The Clash’s Mick Jones and Johnny Depp
Bass: Cait O’Riordan
Piano/Organ: Carwyn Ellis
Drums: Rob Walbourne
Fire hydrant (no, really): Mick JonesMoney raised from the sale of this single goes to the charity Concern.

Muse and Kasabian split the top honours at the NME Awards
Posted on February 25th, 2010 No comments

Last night’s NME Awards in London, hosted by former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, finished up with Muse beating the likes of Biffy Clyro, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys and Oasis to the Best British Band award. Kasabian snatched the Best Album prize (from Arctic Monkeys, Muse, The Cribs and The Horrors) for “West Ryder Lunatic Pauper Asylum” (preview tracks on Amazon player below – buy the album in mp3 for under a fiver. There’s also a guitar tab book for West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
available for those who want to learn to play guitar like Kasabian). Paul Weller (the Jam, Style Council) was awarded the Godlike Genius and godfathers of ska The Specials received the Outstanding Contribution To Music award. Best International Band was awarded to Paramore (nominated along with Kings of Leon, Green Day, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Vampire Weekend).
Finally… where were Oasis? I know they split up (maybe – who knows?). Liam and Noel Gallagher weren’t attending (despite their three nominations) but Oasis guitarist Gem Archer joined Paul Weller onstage, playing Weller’s new single “7+3 Is The Striker’s Name”. Perhaps the Gallaghers had some intel that once deadly rivals Blur were going to receive the Best Live Event award for their Hyde Park reunion gig – a bitter pill to swallow?

Do you play bass guitar? Any good? Fancy auditioning for Delain?
Posted on February 23rd, 2010 No commentsSo Delain are soon to lose current bassist Rob van der Loo because of personal commitments and are looking to hire a replacement. If you think you have the bass guitar skills to cut it and join a pretty well established band, let’s be honest, then check out the Delain website here (within the news post: “A New Chapter”) to apply for an audition. Good luck!
If you’re not sure who Delain are, see YouTube vid below for a refresher:

New Deftones album on the way in May Free Legal Download Track Here
Posted on February 23rd, 2010 No commentsDeftones are well underway with production of their new album entitled Diamond Eyes, due for release on 18 May 2010. Check out the Deftones MySpace page here where you can get a link to a legal, free download of their latest single Rocket Skates. NOTE THAT THIS TRACK WON’T BE FREE FOR LONG SO MOVE FAST!
Diamond Eyes will replace their unfinished work Eros, which was abandoned after Deftones bass guitar player Chi Cheng was seriously hurt in a car crash back in 2008 (see original BBC news story here). Cheng is reported to be unable to talk or move but is still undergoing intensive treatment – so bass guitar duties were taken up by ex-Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega.

RATM Free UK Gig – London Finsbury Park 6 June 2010 – lottery registration required (link here)
Posted on February 12th, 2010 No comments
- Image by thetripwirenyc via Flickr
Further to my last post… In case you can’t be bothered checking, Killing in the Name made it to the UK Christmas No. 1 slot ahead of the X-Factor tripe thanks to a Facebook campaign and a bunch of people who had no desire to see the X-Factor single at the top spot. Not to mention that it’s a belting song. As a thank you, the band vowed to put on a free gig for UK fans.
True to their word the RATM free UK gig will now go ahead on 6 June 2010 in London’s Finsbury Park. You’ll have to register for the chance to get your free tickets – register at the Rage Factor. Registration closes at midnight on Sunday 14th February so don’t hang around.
